The First Hanoverian King

Georg Ludwig, Prince–Elector of Hanover, was Queen Anne's closest Protestant relative. There were over 50 Catholics with a stronger claim to the British throne; the Catholics' choice was James Edward Stuart – eldest son of James II, younger brother of Queen Anne – known to the Protestants as the Old Pretender. He was the father of Prince Charles Edward Stuart – 'Bonnie Prince Charlie', or the Young Pretender.
